Time-savings and improved work environment in care homes for people with disabilities

Results from an investigation

An investigation from 2024 shows that Abilia’s cognitive time and planning solution, MEMOplanner, not only provide users with a stronger sense of time, greater independence and an enhanced feeling of security, but it also indicates that it saves a significant amount of time staff in care homes.

These insights come from a health economic investigation conducted to assess the quantitative benefits from a care provider’s perspective. The investigation, titled “Investigation of the health economic value of MEMOplanner from a care provider perspective - Care homes for people with disabilities” was conducted by the company Point, in 2024.  It consisted of two parts: in-depth qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey with care staff working in care homes and short-term homes for people with disabilities.

In total, 8 in-depth interviews were conducted with care personnel working at group homes and short-term homes. The quantitative survey was answered by all interview participants as well as sent out to additional personnel working at the participating organizations. In total, 23 responses were collected from personnel working in care homes and short-term homes

The investigation indicates that time is mostly saved by

  • Fewer unnecessary repetitions and reminders

53 minutes saved daily for each staff member due to fewer reminders and repetitions. If these results prove to be generalizable, this could correspond to up to 5 full workweeks* per year for each care staff member — time that can instead be used for other value-adding activities.

This reduced workload may contribute to calmer environment and may provide more time for quality care

  • Fewer conflicts and minstunderstandings

31 minutes saved daily for each staff member due to fewer conflicts and misunderstandings. If these results prove to be generalizable, this could correspond to up to 3 full workweeks* per year for each care staff member.

Fewer conflicts may contribute to better work environment, allowing staff to focus on delivering valuable care.

  • Easier onboarding of new and temporary staff

24 minutes saved per occasion when introducing new or temporary staff, resulting in less stress, higher quality, and fewer mistakes.

    * Time savings for each staff member  based on a 40-hour workweek

Respondents reported that the time saved is primarily reinvested in quality interactions with care home residents, as well as in planning and participating in meaningful activities together.
